This is the story of an unsolved murder, set in Delhi, the vibrant capital of the new republic, in the 1950s when the new post war super powers, the USA and USSR, flood in to fill the vacuum left by the departed Raj and assert dominance under the mask of trade.
Celia, Abdi and Nita arrive in Delhi at the same time.
Celia, fresh-faced and innocent, willingly leaves the suffocating confines of her home and seeks love and adventure in this new world as she takes up her very junior position in the UK High Commission.
She is at first thrilled by the glittering social whirl of international diplomacy, but all is not what it seems. As she goes deeper into these seemingly innocent friendships she finds instead idealistic warfare, revealing the true nature of the Cold War.
Abdi, an attractive and sophisticated man, has been impoverished by Partition and made bitter by his fall in status and fortune. He is now forced to earn a living, using trade as a screen for his covert activities. We see he will stop at nothing to profit from his new contacts.
Nita, arriving in Delhi from the refuge of a quiet hill station, with her new husband, an Indian prince, has a seemingly idyllic new life. But her chequered past will not let her go and the secret shame of her troubled life torments her. She is desperate to find her lost child.
When Abdi and Nita meet an old and unwelcome acquaintance. we see how easily Celia with her naivete, and Abdi and Nita with the pain and shame of their past lives, are easily manipulated by the powerful and opposing forces at play in the ruthless politics of the time.
